The Anguilla Community College (ACC), the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) and the Ministry of Infrastructure have teamed up to offer training for contractors using the Computerised Job Estimation Tool (CJET)*. The Contractors’ Job Estimation workshop is scheduled to take place at the Anguilla Community College from Monday, August 27 to Friday August 31, from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily. CJET Training has been offered elsewhere in the region – and most recently in the Turks and Caicos Islands – as part of the CDB’s Medium, Small and Micro Enterprise (MSME) development initiative.
This hands-on, real-life CJET workshop targets contractors in the construction industry as well as artisans whose business models may have similar inputs. CJET is a simple but effective computerised tool which allows the small contractor to calculate the finite cost of each line item in the bill of quantities. CJET allows the contractor to be in a position to determine and manipulate the quality of his bid, see the impact of a given bid ratio/rate on the overall line cost and anticipate the projected earnings in excess of each line cost. This capability, therefore, allows the contractor to intentionally bid high or low on a given line item, while maintaining the option to spread any projected line losses over other items.
According to the President of the Anguilla Community College, Dr Karl Dawson, the ACC was urged to offer training for building contractors in particular, by the Minster of Education, Hon. Cora Richardson Hodge, who recognized the need for training given the number of post-Irma recovery projects to be undertaken. CJET workshop participants will learn how to utilise the computerized tool as well as strengthen their knowledge of fundamental principles of successful job estimation. Contractors or Contractors’ Assistants who attend the workshop must be computer literate. The CJET software will be made available to all participants. This Job Estimation Workshop for Contractors is part of the Anguilla Community College’s thrust to promote Technical and Vocational Education in Anguilla as well as support the TVET Council’s work to develop industry standards across industries including Construction.
Persons interested in the CJET Job Estimation Workshop for Contractors, or in any of Anguilla Community College’s technical courses in Electrical, Plumbing or Carpentry, should contact the Anguilla Community College on telephone 498-8395, 497-2538, or 476-8395, or email info@acc.edu.ai or visit the Anguilla Community College in George Hill.
