On the 17th of May 2018, Tikera Lake graduated from the University of the Virgin Islands with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Nursing. Tikera is the daughter of Clarence and Kenda Lake, and a former student of the Orelia Kelly Primary School and the Albena lake Hodge Comprehensive School. While at school, she followed the family tradition of playing football and being involved in a variety of activities.
After fourth form she relocated to St. Thomas where she attended the Charlotte Amalie High School. Here, she was exposed to the Health Occupation class, a nursing class for two years. She had an excellent teacher who made nursing become her passion. This class helped her to consider studying nursing in college. Having this experience made her recognize how fragile life is.
Now she found something that she was passionate about: to become a midwife. Ever since she was a little girl, she knew it was her desire to care for babies and always wanted to do something to help people, especially mothers. She admires a strong woman, especially her mother. She has a desire to make a difference, affect positive change and influence people in positive ways.
In 2013 she attended the University of the Virgin Islands to pursue her degree in Nursing where she made the Dean’s list in her freshman and sophomore year. Tikera continued to be involved in college. In her second year of college she was a peer instructor and in her third year of college she was the lead peer instructor for science 100. She was in the top five for her science 100 class and was given a job as a teacher’s assistant. She served as a teaching assistant for a freshman course, Science 100, with enrollment of about 150 students, each semester where she took attendance, graded quizzes, activities and exams and answered any questions while conducting laboratory exercises for 3 hours. She was also the vice president of the Anguilla Association and was a member of the Queens Committee even though she was enrolled in one of the hardest majors at the University of the Virgin Islands.
Tikera would like to extend sincere gratitude to the father above, her parents, siblings, family, friends and past teachers from pre-school to high school for helping her rise to her full potential. She lives by the scripture, Proverbs 3:5-6, Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways submit to him and he will make your path straight.
