While on a comprehensive and time-consuming official tour of a number of sites in Anguilla, Lord Ahmad, the UK Minister for the Overseas Territories, took the opportunity to make two private visits along the route.
The first was to Anguilla’s latest centenarian, Mrs. Miriam Richardson-Hodge, of Long Bay, and her family. It was on the same day, May 28, that the well-known resident attained her 100th birthday.
Lord Ahmad and Governor Tim Foy presented a Birthday Card from Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth ll, to Mrs. Richardson-Hodge.
The message, read by the Governor, stated: “I am so pleased to know that you are celebrating your 100th birthday on the 28th of May, 2018. I send my congratulations and best wishes to you on such a special occasion.
Elizabeth R.”
Both Lord Ahmad and Governor Foy extended their personal congratulations to Mrs. Richardson-Hodge. The centenarian’s son-in-law, Mr. Wilbur Harrigan, expressed thanks and appreciation to the Queen, Lord Ahmad and the Governor on behalf of the family.
Lord Ahmad’s second private visit was at Sandy Ground to Lady Josephine Gumbs, widow of the late Sir Emile Gumbs, Anguilla’s second Chief Minister, who died on May 10, 2018 and was accorded an Official (State) Funeral on May 25.
Lord Ahmad, who had previous written Lady Gumbs while he was in London, repeated his condolences to her. He also took the opportunity to express the same to Sir Emile’s children, Mr. Lawrence (Larry) Gumbs and Mrs. Catherine Orchard.
While on his way to Sandy Ground, the Minister of State stopped at the overlook at Back Street, South Hill, to admire the arresting beauty of the coastline with a number of cargo boats at the jetty. The British Government is assisting the Government of Anguilla with further port development there.
