Wednesday, May 23, was an exciting day for a number of children drawn from the preschools, primary schools and the comprehensive school.
They were driven to Island Harbour Bay to witness the tagging of greenback turtles by the Department of Fisheries and Marine Resources and the Anguilla National Trust. The youngsters were joined by a number of tourists visiting the island as well as adult persons in the Anguillian community.
Only children from one class of each school were present as the majority of them had to remain near their schools, across the island, to view and greet the motorcade transporting the body of the late Sir Emile Gumbs around Anguilla.
The tagging of turtles is an annual exercise in Anguilla to monitor the travel, growth and estimated number of greenback turtles in the island’s waters. The monitoring work is being financed by the UK Government under the Darvin Plus Initiative, an environmental fisheries and marine programme in the Caribbean Overseas Territories.
