To mark World Health Day 2018, under the theme: “Health For All” the World Health Day Committee organised a month of activities in Anguilla. Two of the activities for the elderly were health and fitness sessions at the four Senior Citizen’s Homes: Rosewood, Just Tender Care, Tender Loving Care and Miriam Gumbs and secondly, the presentation of food gift baskets consisting of perishable and non-perishable items. The health and fitness sessions were conducted by Physiotherapist, Ms. Khalidah Banks, Physiotherapist Assistant Mrs. Carolyn George and Senior Health Educator, Mrs. Jennifer Gumbs. The physical activities conducted with the patients consisted of sitting and standing exercises and stretched for arms and legs; leg lifts; bending to touch the toes and marching in place. There was even dancing and singing and some of the able residents were taken for a walk. The length of the walk at each senior home depended on the ability of the patients. Some patients were so excited about the walk that they wanted to do back for a second time. It was a pleasure for the organisers and staff to see the smiles on the patients’ faces. Those elderly patients with severe illnesses and restrictions were given mild physical activities based on their conditions.
The World Health Day Committee would like to thank the management and staff of each senior home for giving us the opportunity to give back to individuals who have contributed so much to Anguilla.
