The University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus Anguilla will launch its Occupational Health and Safety Programme on Thursday, 22 March 2018 at 8:30 a.m. at the Conference Room of the National Emergency Operations Centre. The local arm of the UWI is partnering with the Anguilla Electricity Company (Anglec) and the Department of Disaster Management to deliver the initial thirty-hour training as part of its Continuing and Professional Education (CPE) programme.
The programme is set within a framework of emerging safety themes in the context of the Caribbean and emphasises duty of care and precision and thoroughness in safety management. The aim is to help provide the tools for businesses and organisations to ensure that they are compliant with the moral and legal responsibility to ensure workplace safety. Participants will be guided on how to develop procedures to control risks to safety and health, while raising awareness and promoting good relationships to enhance health and safety within the organisation.
The brief launch ceremony will include the welcome by Manager for the UWI Open Campus British Overseas Territories, Dr. Phyllis Fleming Banks, remarks by Labour Commissioner (Ag), Mrs. Jo-Anne Hodge, as well as the Director of the Department of Disaster Management, Miss Melissa Meade and an Anglec representative. Facilitator, Ms. Shenique Clare, will also present an overview of the programme. The certified training will take place over a period of ten weeks on Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon from 22 March to 31 May 2018. With the pending legislation, businesses, organisations and government departments are encouraged to make use of the opportunity to have at least one team member trained in this critical area of workplace health and safety.
Interested persons/organisations are invited to contact the UWI Open Campus at anguilla@open.uwi.edu (telephone 497-8156) for further information.
