Ten of the twenty-five students attending a two-and-a-half-week summer reading programme at the Anguilla Soroptimist International Conference Centre walked smartly to the front of the room as their names were called and proudly received their Certificates of Completion. During the daily 2-hour programme, students entering grade 6 in September and wishing to improve their reading skills, received intense reading and comprehension tutoring, preparing them for their transition to Campus B.
This summer reading programme, sponsored by the Anguilla Soroptimist Club in conjunction with the Education Department, has been ongoing for over 25 years. From the start of this initiative, Soroptimist sister Stella Horseford has led the programme, successfully steering participants to improve their reading and comprehension skills.
Winston Duncan, from the Education Department, congratulated the graduates and challenged them to learn a new word every day and stressed that reading is a fundamental necessity in everyday life.
The graduates were rewarded with cake and drinks before making their way home.
