Grade Six students at the Orealia Kelly Primary School, at Stoney Ground, painted the national symbols of Anguilla on the school’s road-side perimeter wall, in a show of patriotic pride, this week.
The students, painting under the direction of teachers, diligently did the work in the blazing sun but at times were obliged to resort to the use of umbrellas.
The national symbols were recently approved by Executive Council following a public competition, organised by the Department of Youth and Culture, in which Anguillians voted accordingly.
The symbols, which were unveiled at the Ronald Webster Park on Anguilla Day, May 30, this year, are the national tree (cedar), the national flower (cedar); boat-racing (representing the national sport); the national colours; the national dish (rice and peas); and the ground lizard. These are in addition to the Turtle Dove which was previously declared Anguilla’s national bird; and, of course, the National Song, God Bless Anguilla (written by Alex Richardson).
It is hoped that other schools on the island would follow suit in due course.
The latest symbols were produced by local photographer, Ivor Hodge.
