Anguilla’s gifted youngsters will again be showcasing their musical talent at the upcoming Inter-Primary School Calypso Competition slated for Saturday 3rd June 2017. The 2nd Annual Inter-Primary School Calypso Competition was launched on Thursday, 27th April, at the Teacher’s Resource Centre, by the Department of Youth and Culture in collaboration with the Anguilla National Calypso Association (ANCA) and the Platinum Band.
The Senior Programme Officer – Culture and Arts, Ms Shellya Rogers, who chaired the meeting, also delivered the welcome remarks. She spoke passionately of the importance and benefits of the Arts in students’ academic life and their overall development. Ms Rebecca Webster, the ANCA representative, gave a brief overview and background on the competition. Both ladies also commented on the participants’ passion and excitement, and commended them on their selections as their schools’ representatives.
The programme is designed to expose primary school students to the Calypso art form, and offer them avenues of positive artistic expression, while providing wholesome entertainment for the wider Anguillian public. It is hoped that the children and young people who are exposed to this competition, will develop and maintain an interest in Calypso so that this critical aspect of our heritage is not lost.
The Department of Youth, the Anguilla National Calypso Association and the Platinum Band all wish to thank the schools and their young calypsonians for accepting the challenge to participate in the upcoming Inter-Primary School Competition. Everyone is being encouraged to come out and support our children on 3rd June at the Landsome Bowl Cultural Centre for what promises to be another spectacular Calypso Competition.
