The University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus Anguilla and the Anguilla Chapter of the UWI Alumni Association have announced Miss Kareen Harrigan of Island Harbour as the first recipient of the Julian R. Harrigan Memorial Scholarship. Kareen, who is employed as the Centre Manager for the Island Harbour Care Centre, is a second year student in the Youth Development Work programme at the UWI Open Campus. Over the years she has distinguished herself through her passionate commitment to youth development and community service. She is also active in student and Site affairs at the University and currently serves as the Deputy Chair for UWI Open Campus Guild of Students Anguilla Chapter. She was selected by the Julian R. Harrigan Scholarship Committee from amongst a pool of applicants comprising new and continuing students.
The Julian R. Harrigan Memorial Scholarship Fund was launched earlier this year by the UWI Open Campus Anguilla and the Steering Committee of the UWI Alumni Association, in collaboration with the family of the late Mr. Julian R. Harrigan. Mr. Harrigan served as the Representative for the University of the West Indies on Anguilla from 1989-2006 and as Consultant to the UWI School of Continuing Studies from 2006-2007. As Resident Tutor, he was instrumental in promoting the University’s programme on Anguilla, as well as the construction and opening of the University Centre. A former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Public Administration, he was also very involved in youth and social work, as well as the cultural life of the island. The Scholarship is intended to assist deserving students enrolled in the Social Work, Youth Development and Public Administration Programmes at the UWI Open Campus Anguilla Site.
Kareen has expressed her delight and gratitude for being awarded the first Julian R. Harrigan Memorial Scholarship. “Youth development is a passion of mine and I am grateful that I was able to meet the requirements set out by the Committee,” she said. “I knew Mr. Harrigan for years. I am very familiar with his work and was very much inspired by him. I hope that I can uphold and continue the legacy of his dedication and commitment for the development of youth on Anguilla.”
As the Committee gears up for the Second Annual Julian R. Harrigan Memorial Scholarship Drive and Alumni Awards Event scheduled for April 8, 2017, the UWI Open Campus Anguilla and the UWI Alumni Association Anguilla Chapter are once again expressing appreciation to all the Alumni, friends and family members who have contributed to the Scholarship Fund thus far.
