The back gate of Campus A of the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School is now not only the main entrance but, as such, it has been beautified with the involvement of a number of school and community partners.
“The Departments of Visual Arts, Technical Studies and Home and Food Technology are working together to beautify the back of the school, which is the main entrance, for 25 years of Comprehensive Education,” Head of Visual Arts, Navene Miller, told The Anguillian at the commencement of the beautification.
Each department has taken on a responsibility for different roles. The Visual Arts Department is using its fourth form students – as a class activity – to paint a mural, depicting the growth of the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School.
Head of Home and Food Technology, Shermin Wrensford Adams, said in part: “As we celebrate our 25th Anniversary of Comprehensive Education in Anguilla, it occurred to us that we should develop a project that would be visible and memorable, and involve our students in improving their own surroundings. Ever since the rear entrance of the Campus became the main entrance, some years ago, it was believed that the area at the gate needed a serious face-lift.
“With the support of senior management, and in partnership with the business community, we went to work. We agreed that children’s behaviour is affected, at least in part, by their environment and nature tends to have a calming and peaceful effect on persons. The students, parents and teachers got behind the drive and we received a tremendous amount of assistance from the business community – and various interested individuals across Anguilla.”
Among the donors, Mrs. Adams singled out CuisinArt Golf Resort and Spa whose Landscaping Department gave much assistance, as Brian Corbett, one of its senior employees stated: “We have been donating not only to the public at large, but the education system on the island – not in the form of books or money – but in the form of plants. We were glad to do that and to come and show the students how to lay out the plants. It is all about beautifying the island, getting the children involved.”
Head of the Technical Studies Department, Wesley Williams, was pleased that a number of his students were involved in the masonry and painting work. He thought that they had done a good job, working in cooperation with their fellow students.
