Scott Hauser’s Valley Bistro was the venue for a very successful and popular after-hours Mixer on Friday, 19 August, attended by over 30 licensed financial industry service providers. In addition to the social component, the meeting informed the practitioners of the raison d’être of the Anguilla Compliance Association.
The Association’s Council is currently made up of a Chairman, John Lawrence; a Deputy Chairman, Graham Crabtree; an Education and Training member, Fiona Curtis; a Treasurer, Lonnie Hobson; a Secretary, Melanie Holleboom, based in Curacao; and a Membership member, Skyler Wildenstein, who is based in the USA. Although this is a small team, to begin with, it will expand now that many service providers are signing up to support the Association.
Membership is open to all existing compliance officers or money laundering compliance officers, or similar role within a financial services licensee, or a person who is studying or intending to study for a compliance qualification.
The Association’s main objectives are:
1. To promote a culture and awareness amongst practitioners, and their compliance officers, of the duty to maintain a professional standard of compliance in all forms, whether it is AML/CFT compliance, legislative compliance, good corporate governance or maintaining high standards of market conduct.
2. To contribute to the reputation of Anguilla as a top financial services jurisdiction.
3. To foster communication and exchange of ideas amongst the service providers members and across industries in Anguilla on all matters of compliance.
4. To assist with member training and education.
The Association is not here to represent individual practitioners but rather the industry as a whole in improving standards of compliance. The Association strives to maintain a strong relationship with the Anguilla Financial Services Commission (FSC) by discussing with them industry concerns as well as also inviting their representatives to industry meetings on compliance.
A specific example of where the Association could assist member practitioners is on the recent FSC paper on compliance with AML/CFT requirements.
A further cachet is that members will be able to advertise their membership of the Association.
Individuals or licensees interested in joining this vibrant community should contact Lonnie Hobson (Tel 497 3881).
