cutThirty-seven boys and girls, ages 7-14, from all the primary schools, and Campus B of the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School, will represent Anguilla at the Caribbean Teachers’ Union Games to be held in Tortola, British Virgin Islands, on July 15 and 16.
The members of the team were presented at a sports and media meeting at the Anguilla Commonwealth Games Office at the Ronald Webster Park on Tuesday evening, June 21, by Mr. Alexis Ryan, a member of the Athletic Committee.

“We believe that Anguilla will surpass its previous performance, and it is the first time that we will be having a team to compete in the top ten,” he said. “The team will comprise 37 members, accompanied by nine officials.” According to him, some fifty other persons – representing parents and members of the Athletic Association – will also travel with the young athletes. Funds are being provided by the Anguilla Teachers’ Union, the Anguilla Government, the Athletic Association and other sources.

The team will be participating in various track and field events. “A full team is forty, but we have 37. That would allow us to compete in all the events,” Mr. Ryan explained. “I think the largest team we ever took to the games before had a membership of 21 athletes. You have to be in it to win it, and we are aiming this time to be among the top five.” He further said: “Our athletes went through a rigorous qualification process and we have been preparing for this for two years.”
Twenty-two Caribbean islands normally participate in the games but this year it is expected that fifteen islands will be represented instead.
