It was like a beehive in the Rodney MacArthur Rey Auditorium where the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School held Careers Day a week ago.

In addition to the large number of students, who visited the various educational stalls, were many representatives of the public and private sectors showcasing job and learning opportunities.

The capacity crowd, and the tremendous interest in the event shown by students and businesses, drew some very plausible comments from Permanent Secretary, Education, Mrs. Chanelle Petty-Barrett.

“The Ministry of Education is very pleased with the efforts of the Careers Unit to provide this opportunity for students to be exposed to different careers,” she told The Anguillian. “We are very much impressed with the response of the Anguillian business community and all the professions represented here.

“We think that this Careers Fair augurs well for the future. We look forward to it becoming even bigger and better.”

Principal of the School, Mrs. Ingrid Lake, said the Careers Fair was important in that when the students were faced with making choices they could make informed decisions. She regretted, however, that Anguilla had entered a period when there were few jobs and scholarships available and hoped that the situation would eventually improve.

Careers Coordinator, Mrs. Anita Martin Ruan, was pleased with the success of the event organised by the Careers Unit and the Guidance Council at the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School.

“The aim of the Fair is to inform students about the various career options that are available to them and the kind of subjects they need to study in school in order to follow certain careers,” she stated. “I am really excited this year. This is the biggest fair. We have over thirty-seven areas available with over fifty representatives. Viceroy alone has twenty persons representing all of their departments in their hotel. CuisinArt, Cap Juluca, as well brought in persons to represent all of their areas.

“One of the highlights for me, this year, is having theNormanAviationSchoolout ofAntiguato inform students about careers in aviation. It is a wonderful Fair, with lots of opportunities for students. We have a cross-section of careers, almost anything you can think about.”
