On Wednesday 24th February, 2016, the pupils of the Adrian T. Hazell Primary School spent the entire morning making presentations of Caribbean heroes/heroines. Throughout the entire month of February, Black History Month, teachers and parents worked on researching the invaluable contributions of these men and women. The fourteen (14) persons chosen were Mr. Kim Collins, Sir Eric Williams, Dame Eugenia Charles, Mr. Brian Lara, Nanny of the Maroons, Sir Viv Richards, Sir. Garfield ‘Gary’ Sobers, Mr. Machel Montano, Bussa (a slave rebellion leader in Barbados), Mr. Usain Bolt, Mr. Bob. Marley, Mr. Slinger Francisco ‘The Mighty Sparrow’, Sir Arthur Lewis and Marcus Garvey.
The auditorium came alive with drama, song, dance and touching enactments of various scenes. The children commentated and reenacted a magnificent innings from Sir Garfield Sobers and the auditorium erupted every time a six was made.
A sobering presentation of the slavery and bravery was made by the pupils of Grade 4C as they depicted the life and struggle of Bussa as he led the slave rebellion. Grade 5E presented the Mighty Sparrow and his back-up team as they entertained the audience (pupils, parents and teachers) as they dramatically danced to three of his hits: ‘I’m a Slave’, ‘Tiny Winy’ and ‘Education’.
The Black History Ceremony was most educational and enlightening for all present. It was chaired by Teacher Dorothy Hazell.
