Manager for the University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus British Overseas Territories (BOT) Sites, Dr. Phyllis Fleming-Banks made her first official visit to the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) during the week of 15-20 February 2016. Dr. Fleming-Banks, who is based on Anguilla, also led a Promotions/Recruitment delegation which included Student Recruitment Officer from the St. Augustine Campus, Mr. Nigel Bradshaw and Deputy Dean in the Faculty of Law, Mrs. Alicia Elias-Roberts.
While in the TCI the UWI delegation met and held discussions with the Honourable Premier Dr. Rufus Ewing, the Honourable Minister of Education Akierra Missick, Permanent Secretary Education Mrs. Cherylann Jones, President and Vice President of the TCI Community College, Dr. Hubert Fulford and Mr. Samuel Forbes, as well as the Permanent Secretaries Board and other Government Officials. Meetings were also held the TCI UWI Open Campus Students, the Staff and Students of the TCI Community College, the Staff and Students of the various Public and Private Schools, as well as representatives from the Chamber of Commerce, Interhealth, the Medical and Bar Associations, Fortis TCI, the Faith-based institutions and the media on Providenciales and Grand Turk.
According to Dr. Fleming, the visit, which was coordinated by the TCI Ministry of Education, was particularly significant, as it represented the first opportunity for the UWI to showcase its programmes to prospective students and stakeholders since the TCI became a full contributing territory of the UWI in 2014. The TCI Government has declared the UWI as a first choice for its scholarship recipients, citing the relevance and affordability of the world-class education offered by the regional institution.
The UWI Officials are expressing sincere appreciation to the TCI Government, the Ministry of Education, the TCI Community College and other stakeholders for the outstanding reception and support that they received. The visit, which has been deemed an overwhelming success, has already seen the consolidation of relationships between the UWI and the Ministry of Education and the TCI Community College, as well as a dramatic increase in the number of queries and applications for the new academic year.
