Corito Port, on the southern coast ofAnguilla, has now been officially named, for the first time, as one of the island’s ports of entry, along with the other seaports and the recently-renamed airport.
This has been provided for by an amendment to the Anguilla Air and Sea Ports Authority Act 2009. The amending Bill was introduced in the House of Assembly on Monday, April 23, by Minister of Infrastructure, Evan Gumbs.
“Section 2 of the Bill replaces the word “Wallblake” with Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport,” Mr. Gumbs told the House. “This is to ensure that the official name of the airport is reflected in the Principal Act. It should be noted that in 2010 this Administration changed the name of the airport from Wallblake Airport to Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport. That change needs to be reflected in the Anguilla Air and Sea Ports Authority Act.
“Section 2 of the Bill also serves to establish the Port of Corito as an official seaport under the jurisdiction of the Anguilla Air and Sea Ports Authority.
“Section 1 of the existing Act only recognises Blowing Point andRoadBayas official seaports under the jurisdiction of the Anguilla Air and Sea Ports Authority.”
Mr. Gumbs further explained that section 3 of the Bill provided greater clarity and particularity to section 16 of the existing Act. This is in relation to the duties and powers of the Anguilla Air and Sea Ports Authority, regarding the management and operations of the ports in a commercial manner, so that the public has access to services that are reliable, efficient, safe and economic.
The Minister, who explained other sections of the amending legislation, continued: “The Ports Authority was created by the former Government, and this Government has to ensure that it works in the best interest of the people ofAnguilla.”
The Bill was passed after contributions by other members of the House.
