Ms Flossie Gumbs, a resident at Just Tender Care Nursing Home at North Side, was the focus of much attention on her 101 birthday on Saturday, November 14.
Ms. Gumbs, who is originally from The Valley, lived in the United States for several years before retiring to Anguilla. Seated at the head table, she was celebrated during a short thanksgiving service by Supernumerary Methodist Ministers Reverends Franklin Roberts and Joseph Lloyd; family, friends and residents of Just Tender Care Nursing Home and visiting residents from the Miriam Gumbs Senior Citizens’ Home.
The centenarian chatted profusely to herself and probably prayed at times during the double service and luncheon event.
A short meditation was conducted by Reverend Roberts who, apart from his spiritual message, spoke about ageing and the fact that Ms. Gumbs had been fortunate to be alive at a grand age. He commended the management and staff of Just Tender Care Home, as well as all the other homes in Anguilla, for caring for the elderly. He also commended the Health and Medical Services on a whole for their work on the island.
The opening prayer was delivered by Reverend Lloyd; the welcome remarks by Nurse Agnes Brooks who spoke on behalf of the birthday celebrant, who was a well-known member of Ebenezer Methodist Church in The Valley; the Scripture reading was presented by Mrs. Bernice Hill and words of thanks were expressed by Ms. Judith Gumbs, owner of Just Tender Care Home.
