Dear Editor
Response to ‘Equal Rights: Same Sex Marriage Cannot Produce Life’
The above letter by ‘Concerned Anugillian’ in the 18th September edition of ‘The Anguillian’ graphically lays out the ‘plumbing of the body’s nether regions and argues that ‘same-sex marriages’ should not be allowed as they cannot procreate. The writer continued to explain that ‘marriage’ was a sacred institution provided by God.
Firstly, the act of ‘marriage’ is not a Christian construct and was a model that was around way before Christianity was thought of as a belief. So really, Christians and Christianity do not have ownership over the institution of ‘marriage’, they do not own ‘the rights’ or the ‘copyright’ of ‘marriage’ and therefore do not have the right to meddle. With this in mind, if two people love each other, regardless of gender, it really is nobody else’s business but their own.
We have to remember that laws are made to protect against discrimination and prejudice and are not just made to pander to the beliefs of certain religions. Many law abiding taxpayers don’t believe in God or Christianity, these people have to be catered for as well. It is called democracy. If Christians or people of other faiths disagree with this concept then don’t go to a same-sex wedding, but do not bully people because of your beliefs.
There is plenty of other stuff going on in society which Christians could be getting hot under the collar about, such as adultery for instance, which is a more widespread practice, so why do some Christians focus their indignation on homosexuality and same sex marriage? Is it just an excuse to express their own deep seated prejudices? Don’t throw stones in glass houses.
‘Concerned Anguillian’ concludes his or her letter by stating that we have a ‘responsibility’ to pass on these prejudices to our children so they too can grow up in a world where discrimination against someone in a same-sex relationship is seen as ‘normal’.
