Saturday August 15 saw the Kool FM Children’s Day Committee celebrating its Seventh Annual Children’s Day at the grounds of Coronation Park in the Valley. Over 300 children from various villages in Anguilla were present and catered for, there were workshops, games, snacks and the presentation of school supplies for the new school year.

The interactive workshops were conducted by Reverend Lindsay Richardson who presented on ‘Conflict Resolution’; Shawn Lake who presented on ‘ Drug Awareness’; and Roberta Campbell -who presented on ‘Healthy Eating Habits’.

The purpose of the activity according to volunteer, Mrs. Melsadis Fleming, was “to bring children from around Anguilla together in a fun environment; The aim is to break down the polarization in terms of gang culture, and assist young people to see each other from the different villages as comrades, in a fun and loving manner.”

The hands-on partnership between Kool FM and Joseph Williams (one of the major international sponsors of the Children’s Day activity) is an example of friendship forged in childhood. Three years ago, Mr Williams realized that Leroy ‘Bro Lee’ Richardson (Committee President) and himself (friends from childhood) were doing the same thing, so they joined forces to make what they were already doing bigger and better. Mr Williams works for Tropical Shipping in Miami and the company has been sponsoring the activity on his behalf. This year the company not only sponsored the programme but the supply and shipping of educational items for the event.

According to committee member, Irma Carty, “the local businesses have done a commendable job in assisting with the KooL FM Children’s Day activity.” She hopes that the activity will become bigger and better for the benefit of more Anguillian children.
