Commissioner’s Interview With The Belfast Telegraph
I was very disappointed to read the article that was recently published about the Commissioner of Police Mrs Amanda Stewart’s view on Anguilla. It was very condescending and allegedly an insult to Anguillians. Unfortunately, however, she may have voiced what other expatriates have been and are whispering in their own cliques about Anguilla.
There are some who live among us who probably think very little about the locals. However I am sure Mrs Stewart has learnt a lesson and knows now that Anguilla is not the “colonial backwater” or “stuck in in the 1960’s” where information cannot reach to us. Her comments have sent a firestorm on social media where persons have called for her resignation and blamed the Governor for her selection. Other persons were simply outraged by the comments. Despite this, I think the Commissioner should be allowed a pass on this “slip up” but I’m sure she has learnt a lesson. She has apologised. Unfortunately she has not aired her voice on radio. I think when persons are put in high office it is only polite and respectful to put their voice on radio when required, but it was nice of her to have her first press conference with the media. It would be good if she can let her voice be heard on crime and other issues that are affecting Anguilla.
I hope she does not follow in the footsteps of Governor Scott whose voice is never heard on radio. I think the Governor may be afraid to speak on issues. Governor Alistair Harrison, though some thought he interfered in local politics, must be commended for having press conferences and allowing the media to ask questions. It was a pleasure listening to the news back then. The former Commissioner of Police, Rudolph Proctor, was also very vocal on radio. He too must be commended for speaking out on issues. Commissioner Stewart, let me tell you: this would be a good steppingstone for you to speak to Anguillians and let them hear your voice. At the end of the day we all live in Anguilla.
