For the second time around the Mary Elizabeth Recreational Park Committee conducted its Summer Basketball Camp for boys and girls aged seven to eighteen. It started on 14 July and continued until Friday 17 at the basketball court in Rey Hill. The sessions began at 4 pm and finished at 7 pm. The two international coaches, Shane Wagner and Joey Crawford, who run a year – round Basketball Training Academy in Oklahoma, USA, have once again volunteered their services in helping to train the youth of Anguilla in the fundamentals of basketball.
According to Coach Crawford: “We are trying to develop an interest, on the island, of the kids learning to play basketball. We are interested in seeing them develop. We have a large selection of kids like this that we train. They start off with nothing but pretty soon – once they are focused on something – they develop a lot more than basketball skills. They develop character and self- discipline and hard work ethics – so we just enjoy seeing them get better.” Coach Wagner gave some hope for the future when, he said: “We are excited to be back and as the kids want to learn and develop, there might be an opportunity for some of them, down the road, to come to the United States on a college scholarship.”
The camp was sponsored by the Mary Elizabeth Recreational Park Committee, the Department of Youth and Culture and ABC Supplies among others.
