On Friday, May 22, seven students from Omololu International School accompanied the Anguilla National Trust on a trip out to Dog Island to conduct some ecological research. The trip left Sandy Ground at 6:30 am and returned at around 2:00 pm.
Upon arriving on Dog Island, the participants split into groups. One group was concerned with the nesting population of Red-Billed Tropic Birds, and the other looked at 3 other species of nesting seabirds: the masked and brown boobies and the dusky terns. The Omololu students were tasked with monitoring the island for any sea turtle nesting activity as the nesting season officially began recently.
The students walked around the perimeter of the island, examining the beaches for any tracks or signs of turtle nests, and taking in the local environment at the same time. It was a trip that none of them will forget any time soon.
