As part of its community outreach, UWI Open Campus representatives recently conducted a special educational awareness building session for some twenty (20) members the Royal Anguilla Police Force (RAPF).
The professional development session which was organised by Public and Media Relations and former Training Officer Sergeant Chrispin Gumbs, was held at the Training Room at the RAPF Headquarters on Wednesday, 18 March 2015.
During the lively exchange, UWI Representatives Mrs. Sharon Lake and Dr. Phyllis Fleming-Banks shared information on the various Certificate, Diploma, Graduate and Post Graduate Degree programmes and engaged the Officers in candid discussions on the importance of continuing education and the benefits of online study. Noting that the University’s programmes were designed to meet applicants where they are, the Reps pointed out that Officers could enroll as fulltime, part-time or “specially admitted” students, in individual courses or programmes and build on these.
The UWI is currently accepting applications for the 2015/2016 academic year and Manager for the British Overseas Territories Sites, Dr. Fleming-Banks noted that the Anguilla Open Campus Team is presently undertaking similar awareness building initiatives with other government departments and the private sector. “There are numerous programmes available through the UWI Open Campus and in an age where the costs of tertiary education continue to sky rocket, the University of the West Indies Open Campus is providing Anguillians and Caribbean nationals and residents at large with the opportunity to get an accredited world-class education at a fraction of the external costs, while continuing to meet their employment, family and other commitments,” she said. In addition to the various new and existing programmes, the UWI Official pointed out that they are particularly excited about the University’s Prior Learning Assessment Programme which allows applicants to gain credit for their on the job experience.
The RAPF Officers expressed their thanks to the UWI Reps for taking the time to share with them and following the session they received individual guidance. Several of the Officers have expressed interest in exploring and undertaking a number of the courses, including Management, Psychology, Criminology and Community Policing. The UWI Reps also invited them to visit the website (http://www.open.uwi.edu/prospective/welcome) and or the local Site office for additional assistance as they seek to take advantage of the opportunity to continue their professional and academic development through the online and on site programmes. UWI Open Campus Anguilla also expressed appreciation to Sergeant Gumbs and the RAPF for allowing them to share the University’s programmes with them.
