The sun was high, the stage was set, and at 2pm on Sunday 15 March 2015, The Anguilla Cycling Association began its annual cycling season. First up were the 9 – 10 and 11-12 year olds Road Bikes Category. This was followed by the 13 – 14 year olds Road Bikes Category. Justin Riley, Cailan Fleming and Matthias Pemberton emerged the winners respectively.
Then came the Junior, Elite and Masters Categories, all sent at the same time. The modest but very excited crowd became totally alive when there was a photo finish between Danny Laud and Hasoni Hennis with Danny emerging the winner by only a hair on his head. What drew the crowd even more to the road side was when Timothy Richardson the lone cyclist in the Masters Category, not only won his category of course, but he clearly demonstrated that age is merely a number as he crossed the finishing line arms raised ahead of the younger cyclists. He was crowned overall winner – King of the Pack.
The highlight of the afternoon’s events was the 5 – 8 year olds BMX category. What a joy it was to see those little legs going round and round, and oh, what determination on their little faces. The spectators cheered each one as they crossed the finishing line. The afternoon ended with the 9 – 12 year olds BMX category with Nicholas Carbon emerged the winner.
And so at 4:30 p.m., the spectators and cyclists all went to their respective homes, anxiously anticipating the next cycling event in Anguilla which is the Jamida Webster Memorial Cycling Race. This race will occur on April 26 2015, where teams from St. Martin/Maarten will join our local teams for what is promised to be races of colour and speed in all categories. DO SAVE THE DATE.
