This past Sunday afternoon a very upset friend called to tell me something he had just witnessed driving in an area near The Valley. When he got to a traffic light, and looked back in his rear view mirror, he saw two men in a car stop and threw two objects out of their car in front of a house along the side of the road. The men then threw out something else and drove off.
My friend was curious and went back to see what was thrown out and, when he passed back, there were 2 dead dogs lying there – and one had a collar on top of its body. Someone else stopped and moved them off to the side of the road and picked up the collar. My friend told me the dogs appeared well fed, but pain was etched on their faces as if they had been murdered in a most horrible manner. Their eyes were wide open.
What is going on in Anguilla? The Anguilla Animal Rescue Foundation will accept, at no charge, any unwanted dogs, cats, puppies or kittens at their shelter on Long Path Road and also provide a drop off pen at the Corito landfill. Why would someone do something so horrific to defenseless animals? Mahatma Gandhi once said, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated”. When I hear stories such as this, and many others, regarding the way our animals are cared for here in Anguilla it makes me wonder about the direction our island nation is headed. I believe it is time for the Government of Anguilla to make and enforce laws against animal cruelty that include heavy fines and, if necessary, jail time for anyone doing such horrible deeds. If someone can do this to a defenseless animal, are our children and women next?
