ANGUILLA—On Friday February 20 the AXA Cares Food Bank held a fundraising cocktail reception at DaVida’s Restaurant at Crocus Bay.
Founding member of the organisation, Charlotte Berglund, welcomed everyone and thanked them for their support. She said that the Food Bank started in December 2011 in support of 36 families in need. Presently they are helping 115 families, mainly the elderly and families with children. The organisation is registered under the Hope Centre that assisted the group in getting started.
Founder of the Hope Centre, Cora Richardson-Hodge, explained that the Centre opened its doors in 2010 to provide after school tutoring in reading and mathematics for the children in the area. Now they have added tutoring in electronics and CXC Maths.
Also speaking at the function was Seymour Hodge, former President of the Anguilla Progressive Association of New York (APANY). He told the gathering that APANY started in 1996 with the objective of helping Anguilla. He said that donations are tax deductible and he urged persons to donate to the Food Bank through APANY.
The Food Bank packs boxes of food donated by many businesses in Anguilla and distributes it to families on alternate Thursdays. All contributions are most welcome as there are many families in need.
The cocktail event raised about US$5,000. Claudette Carty, another founding member, thanked all the businesses and supporters as well as the members who distribute the food.
