The Statistical Department in the Ministry of Finance has awarded a number of students in Anguilla for winning competitions aimed at promoting an awareness of statistics.
The winners were presented with dictionaries and other gifts at a brief ceremony, on Wednesday, December 17, conducted by the Chief Statistician Mrs Lori-Rae Alleyne Franklin.
She explained the competitions are held annually. “Every year, we have Statistics Week. This year again we ran a poetry competition and a word creation competition, and today was just a presentation of the prizes to the winners of those competitions,” she stated.
Mrs Alleyne Franklin added: “What we hope is to create an awareness of statistics, and we are doing it through the use of competitions in schools. This gets children accustomed to hearing about statistics and then, in turn, we hope an understanding of the need and purpose. We also hope that this awareness will be spread to the wider community, family and friends, so that the difficulty for us to get information is not as hard as before, because persons understand the importance of data.”
