Anguillian Economist, and former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Economic Development, Investment, Commerce and Tourism, Fabian Marcel Fahie, is the recipient of the Dr. George Irish Oratorical Award.
The presentation was made to him following the conclusion of the 40th Annual Leeward Islands Debating Competition. The award is usually given to a person in the host territory who has made a significant contribution to the development of local oratorical skills. Mr. Fahie is recognised as being such a person.
Mr. Fahie, who retired from the Anguilla Public Service in 2006, is currently a private Consultant on Economic Policy and Business Development. He serves on several Boards in the areas of banking, insurance and utilities, and is also known to have been involved in the creation of several leading broad-based corporate entities inAnguilla.
He has been working with the Anguilla Literary and Debating Society from 1983, prior to the island becoming a member of the Leeward Islands Debating Competition. He continues to be one of the leading persons inAnguillapreparing the local team for the regional debates.
Replying, Mr. Fahie thanked the organisers of the Leeward Islands Debating Competition and the Anguilla Literary and Debating Society, the host organisation, for selecting him for the award. He spoke of his association with Dr. George Irish, a former lecturer at the University of the West Indies atMona,Jamaica, and a former Resident Tutor at the University Centre in Montserrat; and how he was able to benefit from theLeeward Islandsdebates introduced by Dr. Irish.
“I have gained a whole lot, and look forward to continuing with the Leeward Islands Debating Competition [and the Anguilla Literary and Debating Society] for many years to come,” Mr. Fahie added.
