Reading is a key element to any child receiving a sound education, and is the “vehicle for enriching and ennobling emotions”. It is this fact that was the driving force behind Teacher Carlene Brooks’ dream of getting the library services at the Orealia Kelly Primary School (OKPS) up and running once again. This project started in February 2014 under the leadership of former principal, Mrs. Jasmine Hodge-Thomas. Teacher Carlene, the English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher in the public primary schools, got some of her colleagues to work along with her to establish that enriching reading environment for all the students at the school.
While presenting brief remarks at the launch of the library on Friday, October 3rd, Teacher Carlene Brooks underscored the point that, “there is much to be gained by reading; the students’ vocabulary improves and their mental horizons widen”.
The working group of teachers, principal, staff and students express sincere thanks to the many persons in the community who contributed to the completion of the project: members of the working group at the OKPS, Michael Taylor, Wren Hunte, Elkin Richardson, Ron Webster of Ron’s Sign Shop, Max Hodge of Max printing, Cleophus Gumbs, Jed Hunte, Lowell Hodge of Anguilla Printers, Margaret Richardson, Sarah Hodge, Jaris Liburd, Hands-Across- The-Sea, Lance Bryan, Oris Smith, Claude Gumbs, Farrah Banks, Paul Petty, and Gustave Caines.
Persons wishing to donate books to the library can contact the school at telephone number 497-2888 any time during school hours.
