The Editor,
The Anguillian
Dear Mr Editor:
HEY GUYS: LEAVE ME ALONE
I read with much interest two recent letters in The Anguillian. One was entitled “Pay Us Our Money”. It was ostensibly from an aggrieved civil servant complaining that the Government could have refunded money deducted from the workers’ salaries using windfall money obtained from Viceroy. I agree with that writer.
The other letter was entitled “The Harbourer is wus dan de Tief” – a popular creole expression. The letter writer was commenting on the fact that when the AUF Government Ministers gave themselves a big pension increase, Chief Minister Hughes, then an Opposition Member/Leader in the House of Assembly, benefitted as well from the provision.
Mr Hughes did not object to that pension provision. He had a golden opportunity to do so in good faith, but did not. As a consequence, when he retires shortly, as a Legislator, he will receive the same high level of pension like every other politician in question. Is this hypocrisy? If not, what is it?
So what the AUM candidates are jumping on the platform to the length and breadth of Anguilla criticising the AUF Party about? To my mind, Mr Editor, they are only embarrassing the Chief Minister. Don’t you see he is unable to say anything about the matter? Not a word is coming from him. Knowing the man, I don’t see how he can be a hypocrite.
My advice to the AUM candidates is: stop embarrassing the Chief Minister. You should know better. The CM should tell them for himself: ‘Hey guys: leave me alone!’
