Anguilla’s major national insurance provider – Malliouhana-Anico Insurance Company (MAICO) – has announced partnerships with three organisations aimed at contributing to the social development of the island.
The insurance company said in a statement on Monday, May 12, that its partnerships were as follows: donations of US$100.00 to the Anguilla Bar Association towards its bingo event (one of the upcoming activities in observance of the second Law Week); US$1,000.00 to the Welches Village Festival to be held on Whit Monday, June 9; and US$500.00 to the Anguilla Community College in support of its upcoming first annual graduation ceremony.
“MAICO deems itself fortunate to have been considered by these organisations [to give support to] their respective events,” the company stated. “This institution values corporate giving and will continue to play a major role in the island’s development.”
The cheque presentations were made by Mrs Joan Hodge, Assistant Manager; and Mrs Marissa Hughes, Compliance Officer.
The presentation to the Community College was made to Chairperson of the Board of Governors, Mrs Rhona Richardson-Roydon, and the President, Professor Delroy Louden. “I am thanking MAICO for this contribution towards our first graduation of the Associate Degree programme which will take place on October 29,” Professor Louden said. “This is not just going to be exciting for the students, but tertiary education history in Anguilla. The students are looking forward to the event – as much as parents – as well as members of the faculty who taught them over the years. It also comes in a timely fashion for us because by then we would have hopefully started our building for our own home.”
There will be about thirty graduates in all, with separate Associate Degrees, Diplomas and Certificates in various areas of study.
Mr Othlyn Vanterpool and Ms Malicia Bradshaw were the recipients of the contribution to the Welches Village Festival. Mr Vanterpool said the money, and other donations, would go towards the preparations for the event which he described as follows: “This is our fifth annual village fest… We are basically trying to show our young people that aspect of our culture which might slowly be lost. It is a function which we organise for Whit Monday every year. This year it will be on the 9th of June. We are well advanced in our planning, and we are looking forward to families and individuals bringing their young ones and being able to participate and enjoy the event. We are hoping to make the festival a little different from last year by injecting something new.”
Meanwhile, MAICO’s contribution to the Anguilla Bar Association will help to finance the US$3,000 prize for the grand bingo to be held on the grounds of Joyce Kentish & Associates on Friday, May 23. The proceeds are to go towards the Bar Association’s scholarships, mentoring and other community service projects.
