The approval by the House of Assembly of a motion to authorise the Government to borrow a loan from the Caribbean Development Bank, has placed the Anguilla Community College in a position where it can now commence the construction of its own multi-purpose building.
The above motion, which received the full support of all members on both sides of the House of Assembly, was moved by Chief Minister and Minister of Finance, Mr Hubert Hughes.
The main portion of the motion reads as follows: “Be it resolved that this House, pursuant to Section 40 of the said Act [the Financial Administration and Audit Act R.S.A. c. F27], authorises the Honourable Minister of Finance to borrow, on behalf of the Government of Anguilla, a loan of eight million six hundred and eighty thousand five hundred dollars in Eastern Caribbean Currency (EC$8, 680,500 US$3,215,000) to finance the construction of the Community College Development Project.”
The college currently operates in rented accommodation provided by the owners of the Rogers’ Complex at George Hill. The new location of the institution is to be the factory shell area in The Farrington, where it owns over eleven and a half acres of land, made available by the Government.
Opposition Leader, Mr Evans Rogers; and Opposition Member, Mr Edison Baird; who were both involved, as former Ministers of Education, as was Mr Eric Reid, in the early establishment of the Community College, were particularly happy with the provision of the loan. Mr Rogers and Mr Baird were pleased that although the project earlier involved them, and the previous Anguilla United Front Government, the present Government had rightly supported and allowed the project to go forward.
