The Editor,
The Anguillian,

Dear Sir
We are writing in response to a column written by Mr. Victor F BANKS in The Anguillian on March 21, 2014. Global Green Energy Limited does not provide incineration technologies and offers the following facts necessary for the balanced reporting on the proposed Corito landfill recovery:
1. This Corito landfill Project was first proposed to the Government of Anguilla approximately 15 months ago. In the spirit of transparency and informed decision making, GGE Ltd. has been providing the government of Anguilla, ANGLEC, and residents, with information and reports upon request regarding the proposed pyrolysis technology and any other aspect of the Project.
2. An independent third-party environmental impact assessment, performed by JECO CARIBBEAN at Global Green Energy Ltd.’s sole expense, is being provided to the Government and the Public GGE Ltd. is committed to following any guidelines or recommendations made in the Environmental Impact Assessment to protect Anguilla’s natural beauty.
3. Global Green Energy Ltd. has completed a detailed on-site waste stream analysis in Anguilla and will be constructing a facility at the landfill to capture and convert only the day-to-day waste stream in Anguilla. Our plans including adding some additional equipment at this facility after a year to start reclaiming the land at Corito landfill.
4. Global Green Energy Ltd. has had a member of our staff working full time in Anguilla for the past 7 months to learn more about Anguillan culture, to help educate people on the benefits of pyrolysis in comparison to incineration, and to form, deliver and explain our proposal.
5. Global Green Energy Ltd.’s technology will:
• Stop the growing environmental hazard
at Corito landfill by diverting and eliminating up to 90% of Anguilla’s waste stream.
• Supply up to 30% of Anguilla’s energy in the form of truly green electricity.
6. Global Green Energy Ltd. does not use incinerator technologies, we use pyrolysis technology that we have re-engineered and optimized over the past decades. Learn more about pyrolysis below.
Global Green Energy Ltd. strongly supports the idea of utilizing a variety of alternative energy sources to reduce the reliance upon diesel fuel to generate power for Anguilla. As an environmentally responsible energy company, GGE Ltd. understands that supplying solar, wind, hydro, geo-thermal, and conversion technologies is the answer for providing clean alternative energy throughout the world. We encourage our clients, including the Government of Anguilla, to consider using their reclaimed land as sites to build and harvest wind and/or solar energy.
Incineration vs. Pyrolysis
Incineration is combustion technology that burns waste like a giant furnace, then converts the heat to electricity. Criticisms of incineration technology include: incineration creates eco-toxicity concerns regarding emissions, and the conversion of heat into electricity is generally inefficient. The US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) has banned the use of incineration technology that does not employ sophisticated (and expensive) scrubber units in the final stage of emissions processing. Global Green Energy Ltd. does not utilize incineration technology.
Pyrolysis is a thermo chemical decomposition of organic material at elevated temperatures in the absence of oxygen. Pyrolysis differs from other high-temperature processes like combustion technologies in that it does not involve reactions with oxgyen, water, or any other reagents, which are the major contributors to emissions and other pollutants. Pyrolysis has been classified by the US EPA as the most efficient waste to energy conversion technology in an October 2012 report entitled “State of Practice for Emerging Waste Conversion Technologies”. This report may be downloaded from the Internet at: http://nepis.epa.gov/Adobe/PDF/P100FBUS.pdf
Another compelling argument for using pyrolysis technology is the extremely low emissions produced by the technology. While air emission is measured by “tonnes per year emitted,” GGE Ltd. pyrolysis plants produce annual emissions measured in kilograms rather than tonnes. Any detectable emission toxins, such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulfur oxides (SOx), are well below the international health emission standards. Our pyrolysis technology does not convert metals but rather separates them from the waste stream with a series of automated separation techniques and magnet systems. A sophisticated acid scrubber technology is also employed in the final stage of our emissions processing to ensure emissions are always well below international standards.
In closing, Global Green Energy Ltd. is committed to ensuring your concerns are satisfactorily addressed. We will continue our community outreach efforts and hope to hear from anyone with questions or concerns about our GGE Ltd., pyrolysis technology, or the Project specifically at our upcoming Town Hall meeting. Residents of Corito are also invited to contact GGE Ltd.’s in-country representative, Mr. Richard PULLEN at rpullen@ggeamericas.com to make an appointment for Richard to meet with you in your neighbourhood.
