The Lions Club in Anguilla has been commended for its work in the community. The commendation has come from the District Governor for Lions Club International, Izett Mccalla, who is based in Kingston, Jamaica.
“The district that I govern comprising the Cayman Islands, Turks and Jamaica, down the islands to Barbados, represents nineteen hundred Lions,” Mr Mccalla, who is one of seven hundred International District Governors, said. “I am doing my visitation because one of the requirements of each district governor is to visit each one of the clubs that he is responsible once each year. I am now in this beautiful island of Anguilla which is my second stop. My first stop was in St Maarten.”
Mr Maccalla, who met with the Anguilla Lions Club, said the matters for discussion included the service that the local organisation was offering the community. “That is because, being a service organisation, the mandate is to serve those persons who are less fortunate than we are and the local Lions Club has that responsibility to serve this community,” he explained. “I have been looking at some of the activities they have been involved in, and coming up with strategies and innovations to see how they can improve their service, their own club and their personal membership experiences.”
Asked what some of the plans of Lions Club International were for 2014, Mr Maccalla replied: “There are many plans because, as we go along, we carry the perspective that anything we do can be improved. We constantly review our practices. We offer services to vision-impaired individuals, hearing-impaired persons, assist with health challenges especially in the area of sight-preservation and prevention of blindness, as well as disaster mitigation and environmental care. So we have a wide range of activities. Not every club is able to do everything, and each club responds to the needs of its own community.”
Asked to comment on the work of the Lions Club in the Anguillian community, the District Governor responded: “We are very happy with the members of the club, but we are never satisfied. We need more service-minded persons to join their club because we all have a passion for compassion. That is our theme for this year and the Lions Club gives us an opportunity to express that compassion for each other.”
