The 7th Annual Primary School Awards Ceremony was a memorable occasion for 46 students who, earlier this year, qualified for national awards which were presented to them on Thursday, November 21, 2013.
The Rodney MacArthur Auditorium was filled to capacity for the event held by the Department of Education under the theme “Setting the Stage For Greatness.” The ceremony and awards were sponsored by the Anguilla Electricity Company which has been the sponsor since the commencement of the event in 2007.
The students were awarded for outstanding performances in Language, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies at Test of Standards, Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment (CPEA), Music and Sports.
Rhonica Connor (Grade 3 Central Christian School) whose results were: 1st place overall in Test of Standards; 1st in Language Arts; 2nd in Mathematics; 2nd in Social Studies; and 2nd place in Science. She also received the Patricia J Adams Literary Award and the ANGLEC Achievement Award.
Ciara Banks (Grade 5 Central Christian School). Her results were: 1st place overall in Test Standards; 3rd in Language Arts and Mathematics; 1st in Social Studies; and 2nd in Science. She also received the ANGLEC Achievement Award.
Klein Harrigan (Grade 6 Valley Primary School). His results were: 1st place in the Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment; 1st overall in Test of Standards; 3rd in Language Arts; 2nd in Mathematics; 1st in Social Studies; and Science. He also received an award for Outstanding Music Performance as well as the Patricia J Adams Literary Award and the ANGLEC Achievement Award.
Stephanie Scarbrough (Valley Primary School) placed 2nd in the Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment; 2nd overall Test of Standards; 1st in Language Arts; 4th in Mathematics; 3rd in Social Studies; and Science.
Michael Martin Jr (Orealia Kelly Primary School): 3rd in Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment; 3rd in Mathematics; 5th in Social Studies and Science. He also received an award for Outstanding Music Performance.
The presentation of the Patricia J Adams Literary Award, now in its fifth year, was made to one student each from Grades 3, 5 and 6 who excelled in composition writing. The recipients were:
Rhonica Connor, Grade 3 Central Christian School; Danecia Hodge, Grade 5 Central Christian School; and Klein Harrigan, Grade 6 Valley Primary School.
The Department of Education has expressed thanks to encouraging the students to set the stage for greatness by celebrating their successes through the sponsorship of the ceremony.
Mrs Chanelle Petty Barrett, Permanent Secretary, Education, congratulated the students on behalf of the Ministry and Department. Among other things, she said it appeared that a lot of attention was being given to the negative behaviour of a minority of youth. Rather, there was a need to focus on the positive things that many other youth and to recognise and award those striving to be the best they could be.

The award ceremony was chaired by Mr Andrew Blake, Principal of the Central Christian School.
