Two Soroptimists from Anguilla joined some 1200 members from around the world at the annual Soroptimist Federation Conference held in Newcastle, UK, from October 31-November 2. The theme, this year, was “From Vision to Action — Soroptimists Educating to Lead.”
Denise Romney, the convener for programme action, and OluwakemiLinda Banks, the Club’s councillor represented the Anguilla Club. Denise attended the programme action meeting where representatives from 31 countries discussed past and future projects. They both attended the other functions that included the annual general meeting and social events.
Keynote speakers during the conference were Baroness Helena Kennedy QC who spoke on “Women Changing the World”, and Lady Marie Stubbs on “Ahead of the Class”. Other speakers were Jasvinder Sanghera an activist and advocate for human rights; Daniel Adams, Head of Fundraising at Mary’s Meals. Ann Garvie, Soroptimist International President; and visiting Federation Presidents from the Americas, Europe and South West Pacific.
Members attending the Conference were to take part in an event on Performance Square to raise awareness of how women and girls suffer the effects of endometriosis, a common disease that affects menstruating women and girls. A resolution to promote the early diagnosis was also anticipated at the Conference.
