The students in the Hospitality Studies Division of the Anguilla Community College, now in their second year, are showing remarkable skills in the food production service course as was demonstrated on Thursday, July 4.
On that day, the five students entertained a number of invited guests, including media representatives, at a luncheon they prepared as part of their graded work in the hospitality programme.
The students are Stacey Penn, Dadreen Sway-Richardson, TrixtonLamey, Leon Morancie and Shemeka Richardson. They are being tutored by a number of lecturers some of whom are involved in the tourism sector.
Mrs Karimah Carty, the Hospitality Tutor, commented: “The students prepared a very great luncheon. The food was of a high standard and I think that all the persons who attended really enjoyed themselves. It was the Quality Food and Dining Room Service Class and the students are in their second year.”
Mrs Carty continued: “This course, which is part of the hospitality programme, is for three months and ends in August. It is normally fifteen weeks but during summer the courses run a little shorter. The students will be taking their final practical exams just before the carnival season, and then they will have a final exam in August.”
She said that most of the second year students should finish the hospitality degree programme by September 2014.
The Anguilla Community College is collaborating with the University of Technology in Jamaica to offer Associate Degrees in Hospitality and Tourism with specialisations in the following areas: Tourism Management, Hotel and Resort Management, Meetings & Special Events Management and Food & Beverage Management (with specialisation in culinary management).
The Community College is proud of its Zenaida Café’s catering facilitywhich has received many accolades from its patrons. The café, where the luncheon was held, is providing opportunities for students to hone their food preparation and supervisory skills in a realistic setting.
