Explosions, inventions, and a touch of chemistry magic took centre stage as the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School’s annual Science Fair lit up the Rodney MacArthur Rey Auditorium on November 12th and 13th. Part of the school’s eagerly awaited Science Week, which runs from November 10th to 15th, the fair showcased the best and brightest scientific minds across forms 1 to 6, with engaging projects ranging from volcanic eruptions to robotic vehicles.
From the very first display, the event hummed with an infectious energy, as students, brimming with nerves, excitement, and boundless enthusiasm, unveiled their carefully crafted experiments. Each project demonstrated not just knowledge but the kind of teamwork and ingenuity that kept the crowd buzzing with interest. “The energy in the room was inspiring,” noted a teacher, “and seeing the students so invested in their work was truly rewarding.”
With tables and displays set up around the auditorium, attendees were met with a feast for the senses. Creative projects on osmosis, mould’s impact on food, and the effects of different light colours on plant growth demonstrated students’ commitment to scientific exploration. Onlookers gathered around each table, captivated by the hands-on learning and the wide range of topics tackled by the young scientists.
One of the standout exhibits was a motorised vehicle engineered by students involved with the Anguilla Robotics Association. Their sleek, robotic creation drew admiration from all sides, showcasing the school’s commitment to cutting-edge technology and applied sciences. Equally impressive was a demonstration on how a balloon, filled with just the right amount of water, can withstand an open flame without bursting. The audience erupted in applause as students explained the science behind this eye-popping display, which fused physics and chemistry in a way that kept everyone on the edge of their seats.
The creativity didn’t stop there. Displays included experiments on making cream from scratch, volcanic eruptions crafted from baking soda and vinegar, and hypotheses on whether white or yellow light helps plants grow faster. Each project was a testament to the students’ hard work and curiosity, inspiring younger students and delighting parents and faculty alike.
As projects were evaluated by a panel of judges, students displayed a range of emotions, from nervous anticipation to bright-eyed enthusiasm. For many, the fair was a chance not only to showcase their knowledge but to collaborate with classmates and tackle scientific challenges as a team. Whether adjusting displays or fielding questions from curious onlookers, the students’ teamwork and dedication were evident in every detail.
The winners have yet to be announced as of this writing, and will be revealed at a future school assembly.
The Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School’s annual Science Fair has once again proven itself a thrilling stage for budding scientists. With each new experiment and innovation, the students reminded everyone in attendance of the power of curiosity, creativity, and teamwork to make science not only educational but extraordinary.
