The Student Support Services Division in the Department of Education observed its annual Special Education Needs (SEN) Week, under the theme “I am Different, Not Less” (Temple Gradin) from Sunday, February 4th to Friday February 9th. The week started with a church service at the Immanuel Methodist Church in West End. Other activities included the Opening Ceremony and the launch of the Student Support and Sensory Unit at the Morris Vanterpool Primary School.

One outstanding event for the week was the final activity which took the form of a talent show dubbed “We Got Talent Too”, featuring students from the SEN Centres at the primary and secondary levels. The variety of talent displayed was indeed captivating. The audience was most appreciative of the well-rendered items. This was evident in the cheerful ambiance and the enthusiastic applause after each item.

Mrs. Tracelyn Hamilton is the Education Officer, in the Student Support Services division, formerly the Multi- Professional Support Services division, which coordinates all activities in the SEN divisions spoke about the level of performances at the awesome concert.

“Tonight we can truly say that our SEN students have talent too,” she said. “They have showcased their talents in a special way and this was a fitting way to culminate our week of activities.”

The Mistress of Ceremony was Ms. Farrah Banks. She created great stir and enthusiasm, a cheerful ambiance and sheer fun at what can be dubbed the most extraordinary event of the week.

This was the first such activity that showcased the performing skills of the SEN students and Ms. Banks suggested that it should become an annual event – a suggestion the audience unanimously agreed to.
