The Anguilla Social Security Board (SSB) is pleased to announce the successful completion of a two-day mission conducted by the International Labour Organization (ILO) from January 29 to 30, 2024. The mission was to conduct a diagnostic study of workers in the informal economy of Anguilla, focusing on understanding the dynamics and challenges within this sector.
The study, a crucial step towards expanding social protection coverage, involved in-depth interviews and focus group discussions facilitated by Dr. Kimberly-Ann Gittens-Bayne, the project’s consultant, accompanied by Ms. Kyana Bowen, the National Project Coordinator of the ILO Decent Work Team and Office of the Caribbean, based in Trinidad.
The SSB thanks the ILO for funding the project and providing technical support throughout the mission. The Board also extends its appreciation to all participants who dedicated their valuable time to engage in the study, as well as its hard-working staff, who contributed to the success of the data-gathering process. The openness and honesty displayed by the participants during discussions are invaluable in shaping effective strategies for the informal economy.
The primary objective of this collaboration is to strengthen the social protection system in Anguilla, specifically by extending social security coverage to workers in the informal sector. The insights gained from this mission will contribute to developing targeted and effective policies to enhance the well-being and security of informal economy workers.
The ILO is conducting this research in Anguilla and Grenada from November 2023 to March 2024 under the Joint Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Fund initiative titled “Resilient Caribbean: Engaging and Training Youth, Strengthening Integrated Social Protection Sector Delivery.” The consultancy is managed by the project implementing partner, the ILO, in collaboration with the SSB and the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) in Grenada.
The SSB looks forward to continued collaboration with the ILO and other partners to create a more inclusive and resilient social protection system for all workers in Anguilla.
