This year the Annual National Primary Schools’ Awards Ceremony was held on Thursday 16th November 2023 at the Pro Cathedral of St Mary in The Valley. The ceremony was attended by the Honourable Minister of Education, Ms. Dee-Ann Kentish-Rogers and other education and government officials. Students, most of whom have now entered the Secondary School system were encouraged to continue to strive to achieve success.
This national event is organised by the Department of Education’s Assessment and Testing Office, which is manned by Ms. Deavene Guishard, Education Officer Assessment, Testing & Examinations and Ms. Ayisha Bellot, Assessment Officer. The National Primary Schools’ Awards Ceremony is intended to recognize the academic and sporting achievements of students across all primary schools on Anguilla. Students from two private schools, Omolulu International School (OIS) and Destiny Academy (DA), joined counterparts from the six (6) public schools; Orealia Kelly Primary School (OKPS), Valley Primary School (VPS), Adrian T Hazell Primary School (ATHPS), Allwyn Allison Richardson Primary School (AARPS), Morris Vanterpool Primary School (MVPS) and Vivien Vanterpool Primary School (VVPS), to receive awards and recognition for their success.
The 2023 theme was “Turning Trials into Triumph!” and was particularly relevant given the challenges of COVID and the impact it had on the traditional educational testing structure. For more than a decade the Department of Education has been awarding Certificates of Achievement to students scoring 50% and above in the Test of Standards. However, due to COVID-19, Anguilla’s national assessments were cancelled.
Therefore, the CXC Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment (CPEA) results were utilized for the academic assessment instrument. Students topping the CPEA were Jaiden Reese (VPS) 1st place, Jediah Gill (VPS) 2nd place, Chattleya Charles (OIS) 3rd place, Nahla Connor (OIS) 4th place, Somaiya Banks (ATHPS) 5th Place and Azarel Cupid (OIS) 5th place.
Sporting awards went to overall Victress Primary School Sports, Codejah Connor (VPS) and Victor Primary School Sports, Tzion Carty (VPS). Collanni Joseph (VPS) was awarded a prize for Basket Ball. Cynne Liburd (MVPS) and Jaiden Derrick (ATHPS) received awards for Volley Ball. Joden Henry (OKPS) and Jaiden Derick (ATHPS) received awards for Football. Phaedra Romney (ATHPS) received the Netball award.
Two special awards were made; namely the Patricia J. Adams Literary Award which is awarded for the best piece of creative writing and the ANGLEC Achievement Award which is an academic award presented to the top performer nationally.
ANGLEC is the sponsor of the Annual National Primary Schools’ Award Ceremony, supporting the event from its inception in 2007.
