It was a spectacular weekend of cycling for the 2023 John T Memorial Race Weekend.
The weekend started off on Thursday 13th July, 2023, with the opening ceremony. The cyclists present were blessed with prayers by Pastor Philip Gumbs and introduced to the new 2022 -2026 Anguilla Cycling Association (ACA) team lead by Mr. Terone Hodge-Carty.
The Honourable Minister for Education, Social Development and Sports, Ms. Dee-Ann Kentish-Rogers commented on the importance of events like the John T Memorial Race to the social economic sector of the country.
Friday was designated as a day of technical meetings and discussions with the cyclists and the four overseas and one local Commissaires who govern the races.
On Saturday the cyclists showcased their amazing talents and skills, thrilling the crowd with their speed and endurance. The Anguilla Cycling Association is on a mission to make the John T Memorial a UCI recognized event, as the Commissaires officiated the race for the first time ever. This was a huge step towards achieving the goal of putting Anguilla on the map of international cycling.
This year’s weekend events were a celebration of cycling for all ages, with eighty-seven cyclists representing Antigua and Barbuda, Spain, USA, St, Martin, St. Maarten, and host Anguilla.
A total of thirty-nine cyclists took part in the cycling events on Saturday 15th July. The younger ones took part in BMX and Road Bicycles races prior to the commencement of the open Crit cycling races for 16 years and up.
A total of fifty-one cyclists from 16 years to adults competed in the challenging round-the-island John T Memorial Cycle Race on Sunday 16th July.
ACA Public Relations Officer Derick Carty said the feedback from the cyclists was overwhelmingly positive, as they praised the organization and atmosphere of the race.
He said the ACA is immensely grateful to its sponsors and the wonderful Anguilla Cycling Association extended family for their efforts and financial assistance.
“You are the best thing that ever happened to us, besides discovering the joy of cycling. Your support has been invaluable throughout the years, and we hope to collaborate with you again in the near future. Let us keep working together to build better and stronger communities through the sport of cycling. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts and the tip of our helmets,” Mr. Carty noted.
He said the generous assistance from the sponsors made the weekend events possible by providing funding for cash prizes, trophies and primes for the winners and participants.
