On Sunday, May 21, 2023, The Government of Anguilla collaborated with the Anguilla Cycling Association and hosted the 2023 Anguilla Day Bicycle Race. A total of 26 Cyclists representing Anguilla and St. Martin/Maarten laced the streets with the grand exciting sport of competitive cycling. The group of 26 cyclists was made up of various categories. The categories are comprised of Elite, Masters A, Masters B, Cadet and Novice cyclists.
Spectators of old and young came out in their numbers to witness this year’s Anguilla Day Cycling Race. Seeing the great significance of the connection of the race to Anguilla Day, it was indeed a treat to have the cyclists travel the entire Island. Spectators aligned the streets of Anguilla as they cheered words of encouragement as the cyclists rode through several villages.
As always, the most exciting part of this colorful race was when the competing cyclists would surge to the Start/Finish Line for positioning, to the loud cheers of the spectators. The anticipation and excitement made form a great combination as the spectators were wondering which Carty will bring it home this time. The sprint finish was leading up to something special between Delroy Carty and Daron Carty, however, luck was not on Daron’s side as he reported experiencing mechanical failure of his chain, 400 meters (about 1312.34 ft) from the finish line, which led to Delroy securing the first-place position once again. Sincere congratulations to Delroy Carty and all the other cyclists who would have made the podium also.
On behalf of the Anguilla Cycling Association (ACA), a big THANK YOU to everyone who made this race possible and especially to the Government of Anguilla who sponsored this race and the Royal Anguilla Police Force for ensuring the streets were safe. We wish one and all a safe and blessed Anguilla Day celebration.
