Sixth Form students of the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School graduated on Wednesday 28th June, 2023, under the theme “Emerging Leaders in Today’s Era”.
Following the renditions of the National Anthem and National song by Sharvin Narine, the School Song was presented by the School Choir, and a Prayer offered by Pastor Rondie Isles.
The Honourable Minister of Education, Ms. Dee-Ann Kentish-Rogers, delivered congratulatory remarks to the graduates. She encouraged them to find their place and function efficiently as leaders in today’s era.
Mrs. Richardson-Thomas introduced the Guest Speaker Fitness Professional, Mr. Hilroy Alfred. She said, “Mr. Alfred’s commitment to empowering women against domestic violence sets him apart as a fitness professional and his passion for healthy living is infectious.”
Mr. Alfred encouraged the graduates to take on the role of leadership as they go out to face the uncertainties of a changing world. “As emerging leaders, you have a unique opportunity, and I encourage you to lead by example. You are the torchbearers of change,” he said. “You are armed with the knowledge, the skills and the innovative qualities required to address the complex challenges of our times.”
“Leadership is about empowering others, fostering collaborations and embracing diversity to build a better world. In this era, emerging leaders must possess certain key qualities to navigate the dynamic landscape of the world around us,” he said. “Therefore, as leaders who are now emerging, you must cultivate a global out-look and embrace different cultures. And remember that it is paramount to adapt to the pace of changing technologies.”
Following the presentation of Certificates and Awards, the Principal Mrs. Rita Celestine-Carty congratulated the graduates. “Graduates, it is with immense satisfaction that I address you and your guests on this afternoon in June,” she said. “Class of 2023,” she continued, “I congratulate you and your proud parents and all other relatives and members of your support system, for your reaching to this point.”
“I know that it has not been easy for you. Thank you for choosing the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School for your immediate post-secondary education and for staying the course despite all the challenges,” she said. “This shows that you have stamina…so I need you now to go ahead and pat yourselves on your backs. You have earned the right to do so.”
“I congratulate your teachers as well. I realise that it has been also very challenging for them,” the Principal continued. “Graduates, always remember that your teachers have endeavoured to develop you into critical thinking problem solvers, no matter what was the subject matter.”
“By the choice of your theme,” she said, “I think that you are well aware of the fact that you can indeed solve problems through critical thinking. Your theme suggests that you acknowledge and accept the fact that it is now time for you to apply yourselves to lead. It is not just to get credits in the form of grades, but to make positive contributions to your Anguillian society and indeed the world.”
A special slide video which highlighted the activities of the graduates throughout their Sixth Form tenure was shown. This was a very entertaining feature for the graduates, as it depicted the memories of their stint during their final years spent in high school.
The Vote of Thanks was delivered by graduate Kenan Lloyd. Among the many contributors whom he expressed gratitude to, was special mention of the organizers of the graduation exercise. “This distinguished moment is the orchestrated effort of the Staff Coordinators,” he noted, “especially our Form Teacher Mrs. Dayna Connor and Deputy Principal Pastoral, Ms. Cherise Gumbs. The administrative and maintenance staff supported their efforts and assisted in preparing for this special event. And on behalf of my fellow-graduates, I say Thank You! ”
The Anguillian congratulates the graduating Sixth Form students and wishes them every success in their future endeavours.
