Students of the six public primary schools on the island met of Friday 12th May, 2023, at the Ronald Webster Park to engage in the annual Transition Day activities. Transition Day is an occasion designed particularly for Grade six students who will be entering the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School (ALHCS) at the opening of the next school year in September.
Traditionally, Transition Day is intended for all sixth-grade students to come together, get to know each other, and foster friendships among themselves by participating in fun-filled activities. Through this medium, the students create great bonds and camaraderie so that as they enter the ALHCS they would be acquainted with their prospective peers and develop sound, wholesome high school relationships.
Speaking with The Anguillan, Coordinator of the Transition Day Programme, Teacher Vivienne Fleming said: “This year, like always, we have done it again. The feedback received from the students was quite positive. They have done well in bonding and having fun with each other, and together they have made lots of mutual friendships. This is the aim of the programme each year.”
She said that one of the objectives of the Transition Day Programme is to curb the negative behaviors at the Campus B of the ALHCS. If the students are acquainted with each other before they get to the school, it would be easier for them to get along with each other.
“The day opened with an inspirational session, highlighted by a very wonderful motivational speech to the students by Pastor David Christmas,” Teacher Vivienne explained. “The boys and girls then broke out (divide) separately. The girls were lectured to by Teacher Jacintha Crawford, while the boys were spoken to by Pastor Rodwell Grant. Following this the students became involved in intense sporting activities for the rest of day.”
Teacher Vivienne said she would like to thank the members of the Transition Day Team.
“I would like to extend hearty thanks to my colleagues, Councilors Chanicia Buchanan, Jacintha Crawford, as well as Pastor David Christmas and Pastor Rodwell Grant,” she said. She also thanked the PE Coaches who guided the sporting activities.
