The Governor’s Office has been made aware of fake news stories that are currently circulating on the internet and social media platforms.
The Governor’s Office has seen two such posts featuring HE the Governor Dileeni Daniel-Selvaratnam and are screenshots of fake videos edited to appear as if they are breaking news from the BBC and ATV. We can confirm that the Governor has made no such claims as made in the posts.
While the Governor’s Office cannot confirm by whom or why these photos were created, we would like to remind everyone that fake news posts can come with a corresponding link and may be Phishing.
Phishing is an attempt to steal from you or trick you into giving up personal information or downloading malware by an attacker who is masquerading as someone else. They may try to persuade you to click on a malicious link, open a malicious attachment, or divulge your passwords. The consequences of falling for a phishing attack include:
? the compromise of your login credentials
? identity theft or financial loss
? your phone or computer being infected with malware that could spread to other devices on the network
If you’re not sure about a message, check out the sender, but don’t rely on any information that they give you (e.g. links in an email). Remember, a genuine organisation will never object to you being cautious.
