On Wednesday July 6, the Grade Six students of the Morris Vanterpool Primary School (MVPS) received their duly earned award as the Hello Tourist Class of the Year 2022. This distinction was awarded to the class based on their exemplary behaviour, participation and achievements in the 2022 Hello Tourist Programme. The students excelled in the production of Individual projects where all of the students in the class produced an individual project for submission to the Individual Project Component thus ensuring that their school topped the overall number of entries received from any school. In addition, entries from students, Ryan Hodge and Cael Smith were adjudged 1st and 3rd place overall.
In the Group Project, the MVPS also shone by extending their Vegetable-Herb Garden to include an Enhancement Element in the form of a Flower Garden planted at the front of the school utilising plants indigenous to Anguilla, and further enhanced by a monument made of Anguilla Stone. The MVPS project was also unanimously awarded 1st place by the team of judges.
The students also displayed excelle
nce in Group Dynamics, with 100% participation of all students and the ability of all students to speak articulately and authentically of their involvement in the Group Project.
As their reward for an Excellent Showing as the HTP Class of the Year 2022, the students were treated to an Overnight Stay at the Anguilla Great House Beach Resort. On the first day of their overnight stay they checked in to the hotel and spent the early morning relaxing at the property before setting off on their Hello Tourist project/ outing for the day. The students had chosen of their own free will to return to a National Environmental site, the Arch at West End, to clean up the area around the site as their way of “giving back” to the Tourism sector. The clean-up initiative was undertaken in partnership with the Anguilla National Trust, the Environmental Health Unit, the Department of Education and HiTek Signs and Designs. After the cleanup was completed the students were treated to delicious, refreshing ice creams at the CRAVE Icecream Parlour which opened up especially to accommodate them, before returning to the AGH to continue to enjoy their stay at the property with a delicious Lunch, preceded by Pina Coladas, and after a period of relaxation in their rooms to allow digestion to take place, they headed down to the pool for highly anticipated pool time. That of course led to time in the wonderful waters of Rendezvous Bay, much as any tourists to Anguilla would enjoy. The day culminated with a Poolside Pizza Evening, the highlights of which were the delicious pizzas and the performance of their Graduation Song, an original piece, performed with pride, confidence and the excellence that has come to define this MVPS Class of 2022. Students then returned to their rooms by 8 pm and observed the 10:00 pm Lights Out requested by the Organisers of the Overnight trip.
On the second day of their stay, the students were up by 6:30 am to prepare for check out and for the day’s activity, – you guessed it- pool time. After a sumptuous breakfast, the students had an opportunity to interact with proprietor and General Manager, Mr. Will Fleming, who questioned them about their programme and their Hello Tourist experience in general – and specifically at the AGH.
The students expressed their appreciation to Mr. Fleming for affording them the opportunity to spend a night as a tourist in his wonderful property. Then it was off to the pool for 2 hours of fun and frolic, a fitting end to their time as Tourists in Anguilla.
