Dr. Ronald Harrigan and Mr. Kenn Banks of the Anguilla Archaeological and Historical Society are the presenters for the 2022 UWI Open Campus Anguilla Emancipation Lecture. Slated for July 21, 2022, the Lecture forms part of the activities marking the celebration of Emancipation, as well as the 192nd Anniversary of the Ebenezer Methodist Chapel.
Ebenezer, which has the distinction of being the only Church on Anguilla to be built by our enslaved ancestors, was also their place of worship. It was also the centre for celebration when slavery was finally abolished on August 1, 1834.
Harrigan and Banks will explore “The Involvement of the Church in the Emancipation of the Enslaved Populations in Anguilla and the Leeward Islands”, examining the pre – and post – Emancipation periods. The annual Lecture, in collaboration with the Methodist Church, Anguilla, will take place on Thursday, July 21, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. at the Ebenezer Chapel in the Historic Lower Valley.
The programme will be chaired by Mrs. Rita Celestine-Carty and will include presentations by Malliouhana Poets, Mr. David Carty, Roots Binghi and the Ebenezer Men’s Fellowship. The general public is invited to be a part of this awareness-building celebration of the resilience and legacy of our ancestors, as we reflect on our past and look to the future.
