Mauriel Carty, the son of Dave and Maureen Carty of West End, recently graduated from Coppin State University (HBCU) with a Bachelor’s degree in Rehabilitation Services. Mr. Carty started studies at Coppin State University after graduating from Kingsborough Community College (KCC) in 2019 with an Associate’s Degree in the same area.
Mauriel’s time at both institutions was possible because of a Track and Field scholarship, and financial assistance, from Mr. and Mrs. Robert; Pamela Holdsworth (KCC); and Mr. and Mrs. Neil Freeman.
While at Kingsborough, Mauriel earned academic and athletic awards which included the Coaches Award for student athletes with a GPA of 3.0 or above. In 2017, Kingsborough Community College won both the male and female Junior College Division III Outdoor Championships. In 2018, Mauriel won the Cunny 200m title, further adding to his accomplishments at KCC.
Despite the setbacks of Covid-19, Mauriel persevered and found his way to Coppin State University in Maryland. He earned sprinter of the year for 2021 – 2022 season, with a GPA of greater than 3.0. He was a member of the Coppin State University 4 x100-metre relay team that won a bronze medal in the recent MEAC championship (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference). More important than medals is the fact that Mauriel found a field he is comfortable in – and a future career.
Mauriel took the opportunity to intern at a school where he mentored and worked therapeutically with young adolescents. After finishing his internship, he obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Rehabilitation Services in May 2022 – and a future career with an organisation where he will continue to work with young children therapeutically.
Mauriel thanks all the persons who made his terms at Kingsborough Community College and Coppin State University possible; Cardigan Connor; Mr. and Mrs. Robert; Pamela Holdsworth; and Mr. and Mrs. Neil Freeman.
He also thanks Mrs. Lorna Lake-Rogers of Anguilla Amateur Athletics Association, Coaches of Black and Gold Track Club Rollins Richardson and Winston Duncan; Ms. Artesha Richardson; and his many coaches and professors at his alma maters.
Mauriel is encouraging all athletes to pursue their dreams by working diligently to achieve them. He says sacrifices will occur but the end product is worth it.
